Peanut Contaminated Mustard

I think that there is no harm in highlighting the peanut contamination precautionary alert issued last night to consumers by the FSAI. It became known that mustard contaminated with peanut protein had been brought into Ireland and may now be in a range of food products on the market. Consumers with peanut allergies are urged to avoid food products containing mustard. Since mustard is an official allergen, it must be clearly indicated in the list of ingredients on the label.

Food producers that use mustard as an ingredient must take immediate steps to eradicate the possibility of harm to consumers. This will include conducting traceability checks to trace any product originating from the two companies that have been implicated. They should also perform risk assessments to evaluate the possible presence of the contaminated mustard in their products. They should review current product labels to ascertain if peanuts need to be added to the list of ingredients. They should manage the risks by addressing any insufficiencies in the labelling and conducting peanut protein tests to determine the level of contamination. Withdrawal/recalls may need to be conducted if the labelling does not manage the risk. Finally, changes should be made to their ingredients to ensure future batches do not contain peanut-contaminated mustard.  This is a serious issue that requires concerted and immediate action by food producers.
